This is a picture of the new truck I am building and hope to drive to the Indiana event. It is a 1992 with a 318. It seems to be a powerful little critter, on gasoline anyway.
It sure is a nice little truck to start cutting on but it has to learn to eat wood if it stays around here.

Maybe I'm missing something but I don't see a photo. I even have both eyes open.
New truck.
I am going wide open but enjoying every minute of it.

Sorry Chris F.
I am still learning how to post pictures
a little dakota looks like it would be a great set up ! especially with a 318! low weight and extra horsepower! .. I'm toying with the idea of building a 1970 dodge dart into a wood gas car.??!! am i crazy? i know it would be a big under taking but i have one i haven't restored yet and its a texas car so the body is mint.... although its got a slant six so it might have 100 horses to start with :-( maybe not such a good idea! but I'm still thinking about it... :-D
John
70 dart :-D
Envy... Trying to find a vehicle with first gen computer is hard enough here. Salt, and cold winters eat them alive... Have my eye on a few Dakotas and rangers. Need my book though :) Goodnight.
Dang Wayne, I wasted about half of last year trying to find a nice Dakota.
Where are you finding these beauties?
Hello Terry,
Hey thanks for the complement. I have had good luck in Tennessee buying the Dakotas. The little black truck looks like there has never been anything hauled in the bed. Also looks like no one has road in the cab but I am sure they have.

Foggy and frosty morning, Chris Saenz standing by the V-10 last December.
I checked the mileage on the V-10 while I was feeding cattle this morning. It’s hard to believe I put 3,500 miles on it just around the farm and local driving.
I will be putting about 400 on the Dakota tomorrow.
The inspection crew for the World Of Speed at the Bonneville Salt Flat are accustom to inspecting rocket cars like the one in the photo. You should see the look on their faces when looking under the hood of a wood burner for the first time!.
.
FIRST LIGHT OF THE DAY.
Wayne, did you drop your barrel through the bed of the V-10 like you did in your Dakota?
It looks like it stands higher in the bed. I see you also put the cooling pipes high in front of the box like the old Ford. Is this for a reason?
Don
Hello Don,
Yes the gasifier on the V-10 is sitting on the frame. If I remember correctly the distance from the bed to the frame on the V-10 is 4-6 inches. The Dakotas are the only small truck that I am aware of with the distance from the bed to the frame being 11 inches. Also the V-10 needs a larger fuel hopper and the trucks intended use is not for long distance or fast driving where it’s profile would be a problem bulking the wind. When I am pulling GN trailers many times the load is much higher than the trucks profile. Because the fuel hopper is higher than the cab I chose to make all three canisters to match and the cooler pipe to try and camouflage the canisters.
Yeah. Well. There you go folks. It has been "suggested" to me in the past that I aught to set up a vehicle to race WayneK in. As I then pointed out this man is always thinking, and putting those thoughts into on hands DOing and had too many years real world experience "Edge" built up. My quip was only if the race took place in the dead of winter on one of my local snowy slick mountain river roads up and then over one of our snowed in mountain passes. Even then if Wayne had 3-6 months to think about it he'd show up with this 4x4 V-10 winter re-tired and my side money'd be on him winning.

I going wide open to be ready for the May woodgas Blast in Indiana. Hope to meet a lot of new folks. .

I can't tell that anything has ever been hauled in the bed of the new project. I don't believe the truck grew up on a farm.
I will be making my first cuts today.
I can almost smell the metal burning up here. This is a sharp looking Dakota, and the payload is getting nicer by the day ! Here's to the wide open crew.
This is what I am looking for as a highway type woodburner. I am too old to be doing that very often!!

Wayne how many horsepower do you think your gasifier will support? I am going to build one of your designs. I have a vacuum unit with a roots type blower that I am going to pull on it with. (Flow controlled with a freq drive on motor) Then the plan is to blow woodgas into the air cleaner of my 855 cummins I run my sawmill with. I will feed woodgas at a steady rate, and let the governor compensate for load. Not ideal, but a start.
Thanks for your time!
Brian
Good grief Wayne! That's a nice little burnout.
Hello Mr. Miller,
The gasifier that I am building now for the dodge Dakota will support enough horse power to keep a mid size truck a steady 60 -70 mph on level road...
The same gasifier four inches taller that I use in my v-10 ram will support enough horse power to keep the 7000 pound truck 55 -65 on level ground.
Shout intervals I can go well above those speeds and have plenty of power.
The faster I go the higher the temperature readings will be. I don’t know how hot I can get the gasifier before damage is done to the unit. After several thousand miles I have inspected the inside of the unit and see no signs of heat damage and no paint have been burned of the outer shells.
All the signs show that I can run faster and increase the temps some more. It is kida like asking someone how close can they get to the edge of a cliff before falling over. I just don’t know.
If your 855 Cummins has more than about 16 to 1 compression it will knock if you put wood gas to it.
Also if you are blowing the wood gas to the motor you will also have to blow the right amount of fresh air to get the right fuel/air mix.
If there is a distance from the blower or blowers where the air and wood gas is mixed and pushed to the motor through a deliver line there can be a BOOM if there is a little burp in the motor.
Your governor can be shut down to an idle and still rev if given wood gas in the breather.
Somewhere I have a very short video clip of me running my VW diesel on wood. (Very low compression for a diesel) If I can find it I will post
There are a lot of big old gasoline motors around for sale, now that gasoline is so high.
Hope I didn’t confuse you to bad.

Hi Wayne and John, Wayne, did you cut the hole in that pristine bed yet ?? Also, did you tell me you got a plasma cutter ? I don't remember. John, I have had several of those Dodge Darts and Plymouth Dusters .. They all met the same fate and I don't need to describe that to you. I was lucky to be able to have my old friend tow off the last one. He put a chain around the whole car from front to back and then lifted it to haul it away. It broke in two but made it to the scrap yard. It had a 318 in it and I could go zero to 85 in it faster than any car I ever had .. The slant six is a good solid motor but will limp along. Just don't ever let that car see salt and keep it high and dry when in storage .. They pull trailers just fine so I recommend running it with a trailer ..

Wayne, I won't win any races with this setup but I expect to make it to the finish line at my usual pace .. Ron Lemler has the best wood for my machines and I'm looking forward to burning up some more of it. Mike
Hey Mikie ,
Nice flare !! Look like you have it going on!!
Mike , A couple years back I showed you the old VW diesel running on wood . We made a short video.
I have no idea where it is , do you ??
BBB
Wayne, It is still on your youtube channel but under the original file name.... We posted it around 3/11/10 or so along with the grinder and generator one. You wouldn't let me post the 90 mph one but I shrunk the size and posted it on my site anyway :o) .. I wish we had a camera when the Ford throttle stuck wide open. That was cool. I just kept waiting to see how you were going to deal with it and we had lots of space to do it .. I'll look on youtube and post the link here .. Mike

is me with the grinder in the land of mud mud and more mud .... Mike
You may want to trim the file names for posting elsewhere ..
Hello Mr. Miller ,
If you will click on the link above that Mike LaRosa posted you will see the little VW on wood.
Note that the throttle is at idle.
Thanks Mike .
Sharp look trailer.
Hope this bucket of blots I am working on will make the trip OK.
The youtube that you were not able to watch was me making sure the truck was running on all eight on gasoline before I started gasifieing it .
Wayne, my cummins is an older low compression version. Has a turbo, so in theory, should not need a mixing valve. Not planning on running exclusively on woodgas, hoping to replace a few gallon per hour at first.
Thanks, can't wait for the Indiana get together!
Brian
Brian, how about some videos of the process.
Blessings,
Chris F
Chris, Gary Gilmore brought his charcoal gasifier over to my place. We ran my 65kw set off of it. We had so much fun we did not think to video it. Hopefully starting on this project soon.
Thanks
Brian
The dakota looks different.
It has been about a month sense I worked on it but back at it now.
Building the cooler.
It’s still not a woodgas truck yet but it is getting closer.
If the wife gets to driving the truck too much I have a couple of plates I can remove and I think she will leave it parked.
BUT, that will make the boy want to drive it even more. .
Mr.Keith, your new truck looks really sharp. It looks really good in black.
Hooray! Looks fabulous. So what's left Wayne?
Making a good deep char bed before the first test.
Yes this is what most people think of if you mention wood powered vehicle.
It’s hard to see but there is about two feet of flame.
I have a few more days before I will be cranking the truck on wood but I needed to cycle the gasifier a few times .
Teaching an old truck, new tricks. It is beautiful.
cz
Hello Carl,
I’m still not ready to run the truck but as I was working today I would fire up the gasifier a few times to let it make a good bed of char.
This picture is with two small bilge blowers and they can’t put enough air to the gasifier to clean the gas but it is enough to begin to get a little ash to fill in the cracks and voids that should be sealed before I hit the road..
Hey Mr Wayne
This black on black rig looks real good. makes it all blend in and disappear.

Mike Harrod and his wife drove over from Arkansas today. We did some riding in the V-10 and we were treated to dinner. Thanks Mike!
New truck test drive
I still have more to do on this bucket of bolts but I did fire it up and take it down the road a few miles.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjghhfOY5Ug
Yippee! Glad to see it run. And no slouch either.... 85mph on the test run!? Can't wait till you get it dialed in!
Under the hood.
Great videos and excellent work with the woodgas trucks! I can't wait to see one in operation and eventually build one. You all actually let people from Arkansas travel over to Alabama to see your work? :-)
Clay Hopmann
Wayne, Do you have any flex joints in the PVC up to the engine or have you decided that is un-necessary and they can flex enough on their own ?? I will check out your butterflies when I see you .. Mike
I think ole blue had the exhaust stuff on the manifold yet ... Only one way to learn stuff ...... Get er done ...
Hello Clay,
Thanks,
Yes I let Mike Harrod come over from Arkansas and visit. I think he’s one of us.
Mike L,
On the drivers side I have a piece of rubber flex hose but it is for disassembling purposes.
The PVC will flex more than the motor will move.
BBB
Wayne, That is what I figured. I need to get rid of all the aluminum crap I have in line .. Mike
Wayne,
Looks real good. Thanks for everything you share with all. I caught your video you did with the ecojaunt (sp) couple. Good stuff. Looking forward to meeting you in Argos. Don't know if I will bring my Toyota truck or not. If I get the pipe work up to the engine bay I might so I can hook it to Mikes trailer. I know I won't get the gasifier mounted. I don't know how you get it all done. Must burn the midnight oil (or woodgas) alot.
